Why Every Construction Business Should Know What 'Angie's List' Is

Have you ever heard of Angie’s List?  I am sure some of you have, and some of you may have even used it for your own personal use.   If you don’t know what it is, you might be missing out on one of the best lead sources and potentially most damaging social media outlets on the market.   I have seen contractors, plumbers, electricians, and other service providers gain a lot of business, and miss out on a lot of business because of what customers are saying about them.   Internet has brought a new way for customers to let others know exactly what they think of your business, so it is even more important to make sure that the customer service side of your business is top notch.

So what is Angie’s List?  Simply put, Angie’s List is a consumer driven review site for service providers.  Consumers pay a monthly fee to research service providers in their area and see what other members have to say about their service.   Unlike the comments or reviews you see on search engine results or other review sites, reviews can ONLY be left by members so it isn’t easy for a company to manipulate their reviews or for one person to leave a whole bunch of reviews about your company.  While exact numbers are not available, they are reported to have several million members of the site.

So how do you use Angie’s List to your advantage?  There are several ways that you can take advantage of Angie’s List without having to resort to any underhanded tactics.  Here are a few that I came up with:

1) Submit Your Info.  First, go to Company Connect and make sure that you submit your company information.  This way, you can make sure that they already have your correct company information

2) Get customers to give you a review.  The easiest way to get your company listed in Angie’s List is to simply ask customers to submit a review.  They make it easy by providing a downloadable form ( Customer Review Form ) which you can give to your customers when the job is completed.  Other options are to have a link on your website, send out a link in an email, or just put it on your business card (they have graphics and images for all of this on their website). All customers have to do is fill it out and mail it in, or just go to the website and submit their review.

3) Advertising.  Once a company has a B rating or higher, they can also advertising on Angie’s List and get a prefered listing.  I haven’t looked into how much this costs or whether it is worth the investment, but it is another way to make your company stand out.

4) Spread the Word.  Once your company is listed, you can also log in to see all of the reviews about your company.  Positive results = Social Proof.  Every time someone leaves a positive review about your business, you should be blasting that all over your facebook page, twitter account, and on your website.  Not only does it provide free content for your social media outlets, but you are also letting people know what a great service you are providing!

While Angie’s List has the potential to be a great resource for leads, there won’t be a flood of leads coming from there (at least not yet), so don’t count on it to save your business.   As their member base continues to grow, it’s importance will also increase.  By incorporating it into your marketing plan now, as it continues to grow, so should the traffic you receive from it (provided you are offering a quality service that is).
